Adenauer, formerly of Miami, Florida. They (he and his wife) were at our wedding, we kept their daughter with us when a hurricane was scheduled to hit Miami, and both Peter and his ex-wife have stayed with us on numerous occasions. I know from research he was an active participant in Fido for quite a period of time. I found he had worked on a project in Dresden, FRG in the late 1990's but cannot find an e-mail address or other current contact. As he and his ex wife in Miami divorced many years ago, that is not an available avenue for information. Is there any such contact information available through you or your group? Any help you or your European Fido counterpart could offer in this search would be most appreciated. TIA Craig L. Treiber 6625 East 103 Street Tulsa, OK clt13@aol.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- One of Our Own By Frank Vest It is great to think that the Fidonews and Fidonet reach out farther than the confines of our network. Just imagine if someone were to read the Fidonews or stumble onto a Fidonet echo and think "This is good. I wonder if I can get permission to use this in my magazine, newspaper or ??". Well, it happened. I don't know all the details and that's ok. What I do know is that I was contacted by a person asking permission to use an article from the "Fidonews Volume 17, Number 30, July 24, 2000" in the newsletter of a major oil company for it's retired employees. The column was from Warren Bonner (Ol'WDB) and was titled "Some Little Known Facts". I also received a message from Warren telling me that he had given his permission to use the article. Of course, I gave my "Ok" when asked as well. FIDONEWS 18-23 Page 3 4 Jun 2001 I know that Ol'WDB would never "toot his own horn", but I will. :-) Warren Bonner has been a columnist in the Fidonews for some time. His wit and thoughts have graced our little publication. He is currently working on a book, and I'm sure has some other projects going. Congratulations to Warren and best wishes on all his ventures. It's great to think that this lowly Fidonews could reach farther than the confines of Fidonet and that someone, not a part of Fidonet, read and liked something in there. It's also humbling to realize this. We tend, when discussing our problems and troubles in Fidonet, to think that "we" are the only ones that will ever see or care about "us". You may think that no one else reads or cares, but that has just been proven wrong. Let's keep this in mind when we write for the Fidonews or in a Fidonet echo. Also, when you think that what you have to say isn't worth writing an article over or will never amount to anything, remember that we really don't know who might read what we have to say and think it worth reprinting. Humbly yours, Frank ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-23 Page 4 4 Jun 2001 ================================================================= EDITORIAL ================================================================= About the Fidonet By Internet Section In recent weeks, some things happened that became a problem. Joe Jared was gone on business. I ended up as Editor. Questions were asked about the Fidonet by Internet Section of the Fidonews. Decisions were made and not all were good. I'm not going to get into details here. I'll just say that the "Fidonet by Internet" section of the Fidonews is Joe Jared's baby. The "Fidonet by Internet" section is, in my opinion, an important part of the Fidonews. It provides information that can be used by all of Fidonet. As such, when asked about updates, I made a decision to try to update the section myself. Help was offered and accepted. Without going into detail, I'll say that I should have done some things differently. I'll not apologize for doing what I thought was best for the Fidonews and Fidonet, but I will offer my apologies to Joe for the way I went about this. My apologies, Joe. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- As said, the "Fidonet by Internet" section is important. As a source of information on contacts for feeds and listings of Internet sites related to Fidonet, accuracy is needed. That accuracy is not just "up to Joe" to accomplish. It's up to Fidonet to help. Let Joe know about changes and updates needed. Accuracy is important. I don't know how Joe goes about verifying the links or what his rules or procedures are for updates. Maybe Joe would be kind enough to write a short article to inform us. In any event, Joe can not do all this by himself. Sure, he can produce the file and submit it, but the updates and information, in large, need to come from the Sysops and Nodes in Fidonet. Don't beat Joe if you don't tell him when something changes. Further, if your change doesn't get into the next list, let Joe know. Don't assume that he got the message or that someone else will inform him. Also, remember that Joe has the responsibility for accuracy. Just because someone sends him a message that says "The link for * is incorrect, it's **" doesn't mean that Joe should just change it. He must check the information. If he didn't, it would be easy for someone to tell him that all links are * and, if he just accepted this, the list would be totally screwed. What I'm saying is: Inform Joe Jared of changes needed. If it's a change for someone else's address, expect some delay while the change is checked out. Don't assume that the message got delivered or that someone else will inform Joe. If at first you don't succeed, try again until you do. FIDONEWS 18-23 Page 5 4 Jun 2001 Note that there is an updated list this week. Joe Jared can be reached at the address(s) at the top of his section. With your permission, I'd like an E-Mail address and Web page, if available, to publish in the Fidonews. Email: al@sunrisedoors.com http://www.sunrisedoors.com ICQ: 14055399 Q: Tell us a little about Al Lawrence. Just who are you? :) I am a 59 year old father of 2 and grandfather of 2. I live in Atlanta, GA and have since 1988. Prior to that I lived in MD, FL and NY. I am happily married for almost 38 years. I have worked in the Information Technology filed since 1969, starting on punched card machines (almost like the ones used to tabulate the punched card ballots). I have performed and/or been responsible for people that have performed just about every job function in IT. In 1991 I moved out of the corporate world into my own business and have been there ever since. I have not missed the corporate life, although it presented many many perks to me and my family, I was more interested in prolonging my life without the corporate stress! Q: What got you first interested in BBS? Being in the IT field I became very curious about the personal computer, buying one of the first Radio Shack Model I's made. Having already had a heavy background in programming (FORTRAN, Assembler, RPG, etc.) I wanted to delve into the world of Basic programming. I came up something called a BBS and put up my first BBS in 1980. Q: How long have you been programming? Since 1970. Q: What prompted you to begin writing Door programs? To allow my family to play the games they enjoyed on the kitchen table, on the PC. Q: What do you see as the strong points of your Doors? Give us a quick review. Solid coding, challenging and frustrating games, InterBBS capability built into a large number of the products. FIDONEWS 18-23 Page 7 4 Jun 2001 Q: Where do you see door games going in the future? I see them evolving into the HTML/JAVA, etc technology. However, the popularity for the types of Doors I produce will be around for awhile to come. My generation enjoys card games, dice games, word games, etc... and that is reflected in our InterBBS popularity. Will it go on forever, not likely... but my generation is not dead yet . Q: Where do you see BBS systems going in the future. They have already begun to evolve from mainly dialup to now mainly Telenetable systems. Q: Anything else you want to add or tell the readers? I have always had an interest in acquiring other Door author's work and that interest continues. As long as their work is written in a language I am familiar with (Basic, wcCode/)wcBasic) I would be more than happy to hear from them! BBSes have been very good to me and I have a special place for them in my life.... we will be around as long as my health permits (and that does not appear to be a concern anytime soon ) As for those that might be hoping to see our products come out in some sort of Freeware format, my survivors will control that not I ( in other words, don't hold your breath ) Al Lawrence Sunrise Door Software www.sunrisedoors.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-23 Page 8 4 Jun 2001 ================================================================= EDITOR'S CORNER ================================================================= Interviews: A learning experience Interviews? Well, that's what they are. I've been doing them just because it seemed like a good idea. From the response of the people I've asked for interviews from, they think so too. :-) Of course interviews are just questions that are asked of a person, group or organization to gather information to publish or whatever. In reality, anyone could do this. :) What is really interesting is what is learned from the answers to the questions. I'm not talking about the basic answers of one interview. I'm talking about insights from several interviews that suddenly `jump out at you'. Here's an example that has 'jumped out at me': When I first got into BBS'ing, there were many systems that were large and, maybe, profitable. As time went on, those systems fell by the way. This might have been due to the Internet, but I wonder? Anyway, in the process of interviewing software authors, I notice one thing that most have in common. That is the feeling that BBS'ing has come `full circle'. The common comments are to the effect of `BBS'ing has now returned to what it started as, a hobby' and the hope that those software authors that still have an interest in BBS software will realize that their software isn't going to make them a lot of money. This is much like the Citizen Band radio craze that started a few years ago and then died out. For a while, *everyone* had a `CB' and was talking to whoever they could. Then, the whole thing dropped... almost over night. Some time after that, there was a small restart of the craze, but it never got to the height it once was. Then, it leveled off to the hobby side and is still out there today. I wonder if BBS'ing will see this same thing? Just some food for thought. Enjoy BBS'ing, Frank ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-23 Page 9 4 Jun 2001 ================================================================= COMIX IN ASCII ================================================================= Confidentialowly speaking ___ <*,-> [`-'] -"-"- Confidentialowly speaking, I'd rather write an message in a Fidonet Echo or an article in the Fidonews. __ / \ _______ /|oo \ ________| | (_| /_) /________ Woof! | _`@/_ \ _ |_______| | | \ \\ | (*) | \ )) |__U__| / \// _//|| _\ / (_/(_|(____/ ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-23 Page 10 4 Jun 2001 ================================================================= CLEAN HUMOR & JOKES ================================================================= Proof that girls are evil: From: "Kevin van Houten" in the TREK_HUMOR_FILK Echo Submitted by Paul Williams Proof that girls are evil: First, we all know that girls require time and money. This includes spaces. No right or left margins. Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain typewriter, don't use it. Put a title to the article and your name. 1. Put the title in two time. The first time should be with an * before it and the second time without the *. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and the other one will remain and show what the article is about. Articles that contain vulgar language will not be accepted. Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00 hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear in the next Fidonews. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File --------------------------------|--------------------------------- Software Reviews (Fido) *.rev | Getting Technical *.ftc Web Page Reviews *.web | General Articles *.art Fidonet Current Events *.cur | Clean Jokes & Humor *.jok Ascii Comix *.cmx | From the *Cs *.css Rebuttals *.reb | Guest Editorial *.gue Advertise *.ads | Recipes *.rec Details: Software Reviews (Fido): Reviews of software for Fidonet and BBS. Rebuttals: Didn't like an article, want to say something in reply to an article? Say it here Guest Editorial: Don't let the Editor get all the glory. Write your own editorial and submit it. Advertise: Advertise your free Fidonet service, Fidonet event or whatever to do with Fidonet that you offer. If you are a Fidonet Service provider such as a "Fido<>Internet", Star Hub or some other such service provider, we can arrange to run your ad on a rotating basis. Ask the Editor. Recipes: Recipes from Sysops, readers or interested parties. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Credits, Legal Infomation, Availability + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- FIDONEWS STAFF - -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Editor: Frank L.
